Unleash the Magic of Summer: A Guide to Preparing Your Family for a Summer Photoshoot

Summer is such an exciting time to capture all those precious family moments! School’s out, the energy’s high, and it’s a season full of so much fun and potential. As a longtime family photographer, I wanted to give you some tips to stay cool and keep the fun just as high as the temperature during those summer photoshoots. From picking the perfect time and dressing for the season to staying hydrated and having a good time, let's dive into how to prepare your family for an unforgettable summer session!

The magic in the time of day.

When it comes to outdoor sessions, timing is everything. We want that magical light and comfy temps, so aim for about 90 minutes before sunset (or 60 minutes if we're hitting the beach).

Golden hour is full of great summery goodness for you and your family. It’s such a warm, dreamy glow that makes your family shine. It's when the light is just right, making your photos look absolutely stunning. Plus, shooting during this time means we can avoid the scorching sun and those pesky squinty eyes. We can also go at sunrise if you have early risers, but keep in mind the sun rises over the Atlantic if we’re doing a beach shoot!

Don’t forget the hydration and snacks!

Let's keep those energy levels up and those tummies happy, shall we? Before we start, make sure the whole fam drinks plenty of water. It’s not a bad idea to bring some cool, refreshing drinks during your session. And definitely don't forget to bring water bottles along to quench your thirst during the session!

Snacks are also the best secret to keeping smiles bright and energy levels high. Grab some non-messy treats like granola bars, trail mix, or pretzels- or whatever might excite the family. They're perfect pick-me-ups for those moments when hunger strikes.

Settle into summer style.

Get ready to rock those summer vibes with outfits that match the season's spirit! Sun’s out can mean the fun’s out if you dress accordingly. Your choice of attire can greatly impact your comfort and the overall aesthetic of your summer photos. Here's how to dress to impress while beating the heat:

Opt for light, breathable fabrics. Choose natural materials like cotton or linen that allow your skin to breathe. Flowy dresses, linen shirts, and lightweight clothing not only keep you cool but can also be a fun addition to your pictures! You can also choose pastel or light-colored clothing. Light colors reflect sunlight, preventing you from overheating and reducing the risk of harsh shadows.

And accessorize thoughtfully! Complete your summer looks with stylish hats, sunglasses, and airy scarves. Not only do they protect you from the sun's rays, but they also add a touch of personality and charm to your photos.

Even if you’re looking to use these for holiday cards, please don’t dress anyone in colder weather clothes! It’s not fun to have a bunch of hot, grumpy kids - and you can find some festive, yet summery ways to get summer photos ready for a holiday card.

Water fun in your summer session!

Playful water action is such a fun addition to a summer photoshoot! Even if we're shooting around Bucks County, Philly, or the Main Line, I know some secret spots where we can find water. Towards the end of the session, we'll make a splash and capture those carefree and joy-filled moments. It's all about having a blast while cooling down!

For a home session, we can even use the family pool for some summer fun towards the end! Or jump into the waves during a beach shoot.

Beat the sweat with the right hairstyles.

No one wants sweaty hair ruining their photo game, even if they’re too little to do their own. If you or your little ones tend to sweat a lot, let's consider some cool hairstyles. Updos, braids, or even a simple ponytail can keep those locks off the neck and face, so you can stay cool and camera-ready.

This tends to happen more with toddler aged kids since their hair may be thinner and pick up the sweat more quickly - so put up their hair with care.

Sadly, we can’t forget the little buggies of summer

Pesky critters won't rain on our parade. Let's be prepared! Don't forget the bug spray to keep those mosquitoes and other annoying bugs at bay. We want everyone to be comfortable and itch-free during the session.

After our grassy adventures, it's always a good idea to check for ticks. Just a quick once-over to make sure everyone's tick-free and ready for more summer fun!

Remember to plan for the best timing, dress comfortably and stylishly, stay hydrated, and embrace the playful moments. Let's capture those precious memories and freeze them in time. Get ready for a summer session full of laughter, love, and unforgettable moments!
